A partial wrap covers only selected areas of a car instead of the entire surface. Common choices include the hood, roof, trunk, bumpers, mirrors, or side stripes. Partial wraps are ideal if you want to add custom accents, branding, or a two-tone finish without committing to a full wrap.

On average, a partial wrap uses about 30–50% of the material needed for a full wrap. That means you’ll typically need 20–50 feet (6–15 meters) of vinyl, depending on your car’s size and the number of panels you choose to wrap. Always measure each section carefully and add a small margin for trimming and alignment to avoid running short.

Factors That Affect Vinyl Usage

The numbers above give reliable estimates, but your exact vinyl needs can vary. Several factors influence how much material you should order:

  • Car Size and Design: Larger cars and vehicles with complex body lines require more vinyl. Curved panels, wide bumpers, and detailed edges increase surface area and trimming needs.
  • Wrap Type: A full wrap covers every painted surface, while a partial wrap only includes select areas such as the hood, roof, or accents. Naturally, partial wraps use less material.
  • Film Finish and Stretch: Different vinyl finishes vary in flexibility. Textured, metallic, and carbon-fiber wraps are thicker and less stretchable, which may increase waste during application.
  • Installer Skill: Professional installers use vinyl efficiently, while beginners should plan an additional 10–15% to allow for mistakes or trimming.
  • Body Accessories: Spoilers, mirrors, side skirts, and bumpers add extra surface area. Measure these parts separately to ensure full coverage.

How to Calculate Vinyl for Your Car

If you want a more precise estimate, use this simple method:

  1. Measure your car’s length and average height in meters.
  2. Multiply the two numbers to estimate total surface area.
  3. Divide the result by 1.52 (the standard roll width in meters).
  4. Add 10–20% for overlaps, curves, and trimming.

Example:
A sedan measuring 4.7 m long and 1.4 m high →
4.7 × 1.4 = 6.58 m² ÷ 1.52 ≈ 4.3 m of film per side.
Double that for both sides, then add the roof, hood, and bumpers for a total of about 18–20 meters.

My Chevy Malibu the clear coat did not holdup on the hood and roof so I chose to vinyl wrap it. I am very pleased with the outcome. Only complaint wish colors could be match to the original color of vehicles, other than that happy with vinyl frog wrap and colors are beautiful. I imagine in the future I will do the rest of the vehicle in the same color.

I was a little surprised with the color. Imita more purple than blue. Specially at night or under lights. The pictures don’t really show the true color it looks blue in pictures but it looks more purple in real life… I wanted it for the dark blue royal color. Definitely not what I was expecting from the color. Quality of the material is pretty good. You have to be careful because it leaves marks creases easily. So don’t heat up too much. Over all the installation was pretty smooth. I will definitely use this wraps again but double check the color before I commit!!

Had some rear bumper damage to my tanzanite blue 440i due to being rear ended. I opted for an insurance payout and purchased a bumper on my own to deal with it at a later date, as I was pretty busy with work at the time. Tried taking my bumper to be painted but body shops gave me a hard time because it wasn’t their part or whatever, there all hungry for insurance money. Anyways I stumbled across vinylfrog and saw that they had a tanzanite wrap so I took a shot in the dark and ordered it. I’ve always been technically inclined so it took a solid weekend to wrap the new bumper and the top of my trunk. Literally my first time wrapping. Frustrating yes , but you’ll figure out your method and approach, watch a ton of YouTube videos you’ll be fine. While it is slightly off from original color, it somehow works very well to be honest. Glad I decided to wrap it honestly, I’ve never really liked letting shops work on my car if it’s something I can do on my own. Take a shot in the dark, you’ll be happy you did.

Glossy Metallic Tanzanite Blue Vinyl Wrap is a gloss metallic navy blue car wrap named after a stone that shows blue from one angle and violet from another, and the film does the same thing. At rest it sits close to black. In flat, diffuse light the violet comes forward and whole panels read indigo. Under direct sun it goes the other way, brightening to royal blue with a sapphire band along the highlight while the violet retreats into the shadows. Most metallic film asks for sunshine to look its best. This one is at its most distinctive on an overcast afternoon.
